There is so much from today I could write about! Up The Empire, The GoStation, and Favourite Sons were all awesome. I’m not sure we can keep up the intensity of the in-studio performances without losing our minds.
John turned to me after the Ghostland Observatory set and said “Dude, I almost peed my pants when he [the singer] flung himself onto the floor during that last song!” Favourite Sons were…well, they were wonderful! It was an incredibly intense experience to watch them perform. Their songs are so raw and uncompromising but right in your face. They just pull you in close and then knock you out. I felt like I was sucked into a vortex and my mind had been wiped completely blank. After only three songs, all I was able to do was mutter “wonderful” over and over. Eventually, we just had to bail on the interview which, again, pretty much consisted of me mumbling “Wonderful. Wonderful.” and go back to the music.
But… For the love of god, I’m selling everything I own and going on the road to follow Ghostland Observatory. They totally brought it today. It just ended a little while ago and I’m still reeling from the experience of seeing them live. It was a full body sensory experience of the highest order (Okay, I just channeled that sentence. I don’t know where that came from. I don’t talk like that). But, I just have to say that it was one of the most amazing live shows I have ever witnessed. I cannot wait to see them again tonight with Favourite Sons at the KEXP sponsored FRICTION show at Delancey.
Aaron, the singer/guitarist, is like a hybrid of Mick Jagger, James Brown, Elvis and Prince — ONLY BETTER. He shimmied and shooke his way through their amazing set. He dropped his mic during the last song and, instead of picking it up, he launched himself on the floor and writhed on his stomach while he sang into it as it lay on the floor. And, it did not seem like a schtick. It was so genuine. It’s hard to take your eyes off of him. He plays the guitar during some of the songs and it sounds awesome but I could not wait until he put the guitar down for a song so he would start moving again.
I’d call it dancing but it’s almost like it’s his own unique thing. Let’s just say he was really moving!! Meanwhile, Thomas was shifting back and forth between the drum kit and his bank of synthesizers jamming away. I didn’t know where to look at any given moment as I didn’t want to miss a move that either of them made. Thank goodness there are only two of them in the band. Otherwise, they would have to do a four hour set for me to soak it all in. As it was, the in-studio went way way too fast.
