Concerts at the Mural this Friday with Headlike a

Week 3 of the Concerts at the Mural series is upon us, and if the high temperatures and unrelenting sun was too much for you last Friday and Saturday, the weather might be a little more to your liking this Friday when Head Like A Kite, Say Hi, and (just added!) Tea Cozies will be at the Mural Amphitheater. The preliminary forecast says the high will only be 66 degrees! I almost find this hard to believe given that it feels like it’s 96 outside as I’m writing this, but it’s a safe bet that the heat won’t be an issue. KEXP DJ Troy Nelson will host this week’s event, which USA Soccer Jersey, like all of the Concerts at the Mural events, presented by KEXP and Seattle Center, will be absolutely free of charge. HEAD LIKE A KITE

Local band Head Like A Kite was started by Dave Einmo after he was inspired by some old Super 8 videos his parents took in the 70s. Working with producer Brain Deck he recorded an album, Random Portraits of Home Movies, and recruited Trent Moorman to play drums. With Einmo supplying the samples, guitar, synths, and vocals and Moorman on drums, the duo plays a varied style of electronic rock, often enlisting the help of guest singers such as Smoosh’s Asya on “Let’s Start It All Again” and “Daydream Vacation,” and Tilson on “We’re Always On The Wrong Side Of Sunrise.” They released Dreams Suspend Night in 2010, which live audiences received a taste of at KEXP’s Hood to Hood event in West Seattle and at this year’s Capitol Hill Block Party. As is evidenced by their music videos, interview, and the fact that they showed up to a 2006 KEXP in-studio performance in bathrobes, the duo is spontaneous, carefree, and doesn’t take their success too seriously. An evening performance this Friday at the Mural Amphitheater should be nothing but a good time.

SAY HI

Say Hi is also from Seattle (by way of Brooklyn) and consists of Eric Elbogen and whatever other musicians he happens to be playing with. Elbogen started playing music in 2002 under the name Say Hi To Your Mom. He moved to Seattle in 2006 and subsequently simplified his band’s moniker to the less sophomoric “Say Hi” and began recording more lyrically rich and self-realized music. His latest album Oohs & Aahs was released in 2009 on Barsuk and best typifies this change, with most considering it to be his best album yet. All of Say Hi’s music is recorded soley by a holed-up Elbogen, which is hard to believe after listening to the catchy, fully-formed pop hooks. He’ll be with a band on Friday though in what should be a great early-evening show leading into Head Like A Kite. Say Hi will also be playing live on KEXP Thursday at 9:30 on The Morning Show with John Richards.

TEA COZIES

Just added to the bill: Seattle’s garage pop darling Tea Cozies! Started by high school friends Jessi Reed and Brady Harvey back in Colorado, the band brought their summery vibes to Seattle and now to the Seattle Center’s Mural Amphitheater stage! Their latest album, Hot Probs, produced by Erik Blood, is lively and catchy fun, so bring your dancing shoes and get ready to clap along!
