Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased tracks, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “By Your Hand” by Los Campesinos! from the 2011 album Hello Sadness on Arts & Crafts.
Although the majority are now based elsewhere and they’ve lost a few band members since their 2010 album, Romance Is Boring, Los Campesinos! are a well loved seven piece indie pop band from the UK, formed in early 2006 at Cardiff University in Wales. Hello Sadness is the band’s fourth full-length album in four years and was tempered by frontman Gareth dealing with a recent breakup. His lyrics were comprehensively rewritten to acknowledge this, and are heavy with loss and longing. Unlike their previous albums, Hello Sadness was recorded in a beautiful and isolated setting in Spain and mixed in Seattle with John Goodmanson (Sleater Kinney, Death Cab For Cutie). Our featured song, “By Your Hand,” which kicks off the album is full of conflict, with Gareth proclaiming “By your hand is the only end I forsee,”; however, what actually ensues is something much happier sounding than it’s lyrics might imply. Whatever motivation Gareth and LC! use to craft their songs, we sure hope they never run out of material.
Los Campesinos! just kicked off their UK touring stint in support of the new record and live dates are set up for November in the US and a North American tour currently being routed for January next year.
